Message from Sharon McDermott

I am pleased and excited to acquire HistoryAmerica TOURS from Pete and Julia Brown, who have built a firm with a valued reputation for providing fascinating, accurate, and enjoyable visits to our nation’s historic and cultural sites that have acquainted travelers with the meanings of our past.

After a career in medical technology and as a college teacher, my interest in cultural tourism began in 1981 with employment in a firm that provided guides and sightseeing services to motor coach groups coming to the Black Hills of South Dakota. I began my own company, Great American Tour Company, in 1992, and while my interest still includes scenic and cultural sites, I have always had a strong history element in the tours of the Black Hills and the customized special interest tours I create for other companies and groups in many parts of the country. It is a company the same size of HistoryAmerica with an emphasis on “great” rather than “huge” and with the same outlook tailored to personalized service and attention to detail.

As you can see by the offerings for 2007, we plan to carry on the tradition of high quality tours and hand crafted programs. The presence of the finest Historian Guides in their fields anywhere in the country will continue to be the hallmark of HistoryAmerica, and I am proud to be working with these acclaimed people.

We are taking reservations now, so come with us and experience TRAVEL, the perfect freedom.

Recent Group Photos

NEZ PERCE – The Nez group posing on July 17, 2006, at Bear Paw Battlefield after a circuitous trip from Lewiston, ID. This is a story that proved both breathtaking and emotional. HistoryAmerica will present this journey, led by Ed Bearss, again in 2008.

BARONS, BARS AND BROTHELS How the West Was Fun led by Mike Koury proved to be just that. Here the group poses at the National Fish Hatchery just outside Leadville, CO, on August 8, 2006. Mike is looking forward to leading more tours for HistoryAmerica
in the future.

News Bits From HistoryAmerica

We mourn the passing of our friend Chuck Platt, who was a HistoryAmerica Regular, an enduring friend of Pete and Julia Brown, and a founder of the Lincoln Forum. We are profoundly sorry to lose him:

The odyssey of a history buff: Pete's been on the road recently to visit the gravesites of more vice presidents. He now has seen all but three and has compiled the saga on the web. Check it out!

Oldie-but-goodie pictures of the month

Craig Symonds,
left, retired history professor from the U.S. Naval Academy, will lead an Oliver Hazard Perry and War of 1812 themed tour for HistoryAmerica in June 2007. Perry is one of the central figures Craig deals with in his new book Decision at Sea, Oxford University Press, 2005.

At right is a 1994 photo of Cheri Graves with her three little girls on their ranch in Wyoming, site of the Dull Knife fight of November 25, 1876. The girls are grown up now, but Cheri and her husband, Ken, will be there to greet our tour group and we will spend the day at the ranch, hiking and learning about the Northern Cheyenne and the Powder River Expedition on the Crazy Horse and Custer tour in July 2007.
