Lincoln, Grant, & Twain
Three for the Century

Aug 29–Sept 4
Historian Guide Catherine Clinton

Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Mark Twain were three men from the Heartland whose lives were emblematic for 19th-century America — one a president who saved the Union, one a warrior who led the Union to victory, and the other “the father of American literature.”

Twain believed Lincoln to be the noblest and the best man after Washington that this land had produced. They shared humble beginnings, a similar view of slavery, a reputation for humor, and an ability as a public speaker to win a crowd. Lincoln and Grant found themselves repeatedly defeated on their paths to greatness, but they emerged from the Civil War as heroes. Twain and Grant shared a friendship, and the famed writer financed the publication of Grant’s acclaimed Memoirs. Their youthful beginnings and landmark achievements reflect the way in which ordinary men and extraordinary times shaped Civil War America.

Visit the places in Illinois and Missouri significant to the history and development of these three great men. Their early struggles and rise to prominence, as well as the way in which their respect and admiration for one another shaped the century, is the theme of this new tour.

Celebrate their lives with nationally acclaimed historian and author Catherine Clinton, who holds degrees from Harvard and Princeton—and a chair in U.S. History at Queens University in Belfast. She has written and edited over two dozen books and is a member of the advisory committee to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Bicentennial.

ITINERARY

Sunday, August 29
Gather at the Hilton-St. Louis Downtown for a briefing and welcome dinner hosted by Catherine Clinton and HistoryAmerica TOURS.

Monday, August 30
Our travels this morning take us into central Illinois. We will visit New Salem, where we step back in time 150 years to experience the way Lincoln spent his early adulthood. At the Lincoln Courtroom in Beardstown we learn about a murder case Lincoln tried 2 years before he was elected president. Accommodations for the next three nights are in Springfield.

Tuesday, August 31
When it comes to Lincoln sites, Springfield clearly sets the standard for authenticity and excellence. We will stroll through the Historic District, now beautifully restored to its 1860s appearance. The memory of Lincoln is still fresh here, and you will have the sense that he has just stepped away from his law office or wrapped up a court case or embarked on his inaugural journey.

Wednesday, September 1
Today we will visit the Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum, where in-depth displays and exhibits bring the Lincoln family vividly to life. We will follow in more footsteps of Lincoln this afternoon from his neighborhood to Oak Ridge Cemetery, final resting place for the President, where the words, “Now he belongs to the ages,” command your attention.

Thursday, September 2
The quaint Mississippi River town of Hannibal is our destination this morning. On our walking tour with “Mark Twain Himself” we will explore the village of Samuel Clemens’ childhood and learn of his life from riverboat days to becoming a national treasure. This afternoon we will return to St. Louis for the final two evenings.

Friday, September 3
First on the agenda this morning is White Haven, the early home of Ulysses and Julia Grant, which commemorates their lives against the turbulent backdrop of the nineteenth century. We cap our tour with a visit to the Gateway Arch, perfect monument to the spirit of Lincoln, Grant, and Twain, and their vision of the future of America. We will enjoy a farewell dinner together this evening at the hotel.

Saturday, September 4
Depart at your leisure after breakfast.
